Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story charts the emotional development of the protagonist, Elizabeth Bennet, who learns the error of making hasty judgements and comes to appreciate the difference between the superficial and the essential. The comedy of the writing lies in the depiction of manners, education, and marriage and money in the British Regency. Mr Bennet of the Longbourn estate has five daughters, but his property is entailed, meaning that none of the girls can inherit it. Since his wife had no fortune, it is imperative that one of the girls marries well in order to support the others on his death. However, Jane Austen's opening line 'It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife' is a sentence filled with irony and playfulness. The novel revolves around the necessity of marrying for love, not simply for mercenary reasons despite the social pressures to make a good (i.e. wealthy) match. Pride and Prejudice retains the fascination of modern readers, consistently appearing near the top of lists of "most-loved books" among both literary scholars and the general public. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold, and paved the way[specify] for many archetypes that abound in modern literature. Continuing interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes Pride & Prejudice (2005 film) - Wikipedia Pride & Prejudice is a 2005 British-American romantic drama directed by Joe Wright and based on Jane Austen's 1813 novel of the same name The film depicts five Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Reviews Discussion "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen started off annoying me and ended up enchanting me Up until about page one hundred I found this book vexing frivolous and down Pride and Prejudice -- Jane Austen Illustrated annotated hypertext of 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice with chronology map notes on characters and Regency society (including the status of women Pride and Prejudice Rain - YouTube Mr Darcy & Elizabeth "You have bewitched me body and soul and I love I love I love you" - Duration: 4:00 FiftyShadesOfShar 216137 views BBC - Drama - Pride and Prejudice Re-live the romance and drama of Andrew Davies' lavish adaptation starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle Pride and Prejudice (TV Mini-Series 1995 ) - IMDb Jane Austen's classic novel about the prejudice that occurred between the 19th century classes and the pride which would keep lovers apart SparkNotes: Pride and Prejudice From a general summary to chapter summaries to explanations of famous quotes the SparkNotes Pride and Prejudice Study Guide has everything you need to ace quizzes Soundtrack - Pride and Prejudice - Stars And Butterflies Pride and Prejudice - Stars And Butterflies This feature is not available right now Please try again later Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Search eText Read Meaning of Quote in Relation to Pride and Prejudice Hi Everyone How would you define and explain this quote in relation to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice?
